Digital SAT Score Improvement: How Riya Went From 1180 to 1510 and Got Into Purdue Engineering
Riya had always wanted to study engineering in the US.
What she did not have — when she first sat the Digital SAT in Class 11 — was a score that would get her there. Her first attempt: 1180.
Not a starting point she was proud of. But it turned out to be exactly the right place to begin.
What Went Wrong the First Time
Riya had prepared. She had done Khan Academy practice sets, gone through the Math topics she thought were weak, and sat a couple of practice tests before the real thing.
Her Math score came back at 680. Solid — but not exceptional. Her Reading and Writing score was 500. And that was the problem nobody had told her to expect.
This is the most common pattern for Indian students on the Digital SAT. Strong Math, weak Reading and Writing — not because they cannot read, but because the RW section tests a very specific kind of precision that Indian school curricula simply do not prepare you for. The Purdue Engineering Application
Purdue University’s College of Engineering is among the most competitive engineering programmes in the US — admitted students typically present SAT scores in the 1400s and above, with the middle 50% range running from 1370 to 1510.
With a 1510, a strong academic record from a Bangalore CBSE school, and a focused application built around her robotics project and coding internship, Riya applied to Purdue’s College of Engineering for Fall 2027.
The admit came six weeks later.
She begins in West Lafayette, Indiana, this August.
